SlowTalk: Selfcare
How do you take care of yourself in a world marked by overwork, burnout and depression?
Care can be described as an oppressive feeling of restlessness and anxiety and the resulting effort to restore our well-being. Feelings of anxiety and restlessness have existed since time immemorial, but it seems that in the 21st century we suffer from them more intensely and more frequently than in the past. Since the inception of Covid, the Netherlands has seen rising absenteeism due to Burn Out.
So what do we need to feel healthy and happy again? Is it enough to apply an "antidote" or are there deeper causes that we can investigate? Socrates states that one must first and foremost take care of one's soul. What does such a statement mean? Is this still applicable for us today?
I would say today more than ever, because what Socrates called soul, today we define with psyche, spirit, mental. According to Socrates, the unexamined life is not worth living. This indicates that he took the invitation on the temple of Apollo, "Know thyself," very seriously. In fact, it formed his fundamental attitude by which he lived his life.
Could self-knowledge also play a role in our well-being for us today?
